ODDHUNT was actually an idea for something completely different.
Surf photographer at heart — the rest is pure luck.
More than 10 years ago, I decided to start training for another career — less strategic, more creative. Not that the two don’t go hand in hand, but after working as a business strategist and business developer for 3+ decades, I needed something new.
I bought a camera and two lenses, and was fortunate to have the renowned photographer Vagn-Ebbe Kier as my teacher. Some things came easily; most didn’t.
Although I’m often perceived as a surf, people, and travel photographer, concept photography is where I truly thrive. I’ve learned that my real skill lies in combining the past with the present.
I listen carefully and ask a lot of questions.
I work wherever work takes me, and I’m equally comfortable working alone or leading teams of 20 or more people.
You shouldn’t reach out to me just because I own a camera, but because I can contribute to the briefing — and elevate the final result.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch — my hourly rate doesn’t apply until the final contract is on paper.
A Little Backstory
I did lose a wave!
World Cup on Sylt, Germany – semifinal – slalom race. Conditions were perfect, and for the first time ever, all my training clicked. I was leading the field of eight, chasing the last outside marker. I was ahead by more than five board lengths.
You want to turn on the edge of a wave — it’s by far the quickest way without losing any speed. You can control training and gear, but the rest is out of your hands. That’s especially true when it comes to wind, sea, and waves. When I reached the marker, the water was completely flat.
No power jibe meant my turn was wider and much slower than the blazing pack of surfers behind me. One second I had a foot in the final — the next, well… let’s just say I finished a very unhappy fifth.
The thing is, I know how my career went after that — but what if I had turned on that one perfect wave? I didn’t, but at least it gave me the perfect name for my blog: ilostawavein79.com
Me – and Surfing in General
Many years back, I was part of the worldwide circus — but not anymore! I was nowhere near the top 10 in the world, not even here in Denmark. Even then, the sport was cool and competition tough.
Even now, years later, I still consider myself a surfer — though my skills are nothing compared to today’s competitors.
Once you’ve experienced the surfer’s lifestyle, you don’t really need anything else. I’ve stayed true to that life and consider myself part of the old crowd — but these days, I enjoy the stunts through the lens of my camera.
Back then, very few photographers traveled with the circus. We had to take most photos ourselves — but honestly, who wants to stand on the beach taking pictures of friends and competitors when the surf and wind are perfect? Only a few!
I hope to capture not just the moves and jumps, but also the stories behind the sport — the reasons, the gear, and the lifestyle.
